Good Shepherd Lutheran Church encourages gift giving other than just through financial donations. Many of our small groups, ministry teams, and ministry areas focus on giving in a variety of ways. See the activities below to find out more.
On-Going Activities
Through GSLC's Meal of the Month program, GSLC members donate requested items to local food banks. Recipients and the requested items are both rotated every month. This program has been providing much needed nourishment to people in the metropolitan St. Louis area for years. Some of the charities that receive these gifts are: Circle of Concern in Valley Park as well as Immanuel Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, and Lutheran North Outreach in St. Louis.
Previous Activities
Every year, GSLC sets a goal to exceed last year's donations for purchase of sheep for Heifer International. Congregation members donated funds to purchase 42 sheep in 2006, with matching funds from both Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and GSLC's Benevolence Fund.
House of Hope is a local organization that does missionary work in Haiti. GSLC members assisted House of Hope with the collection of toiletry items such as toothbrushes/paste, soap, shampoo, hair accessories, lotions, and children's vitamins and peanut butter in the spring of 2005.
In 2006, GSLC members donated enough food to provide a complete Thanksgiving meal for 125 needy families. Baskets that included turkeys, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, green beans, yams, marshmallows, baking tins, milk, bread and other various food items were packed up and delivered to these families throughout the St. Louis area.
Every year on Super Bowl Sunday, GSLC members donate money to purchase food or meat for a food pantry.
