As we celebrate the blessings of civic freedom, this sermon asks a deeper question: What does freedom mean in the way of Jesus? Drawing from Leviticus, Galatians, John, and Martin Luther’s teaching on the two kingdoms, we explore the difference between civic liberty and the spiritual freedom Christ gives.

Jesus frees us not simply to pursue independence, but to love, forgive, serve, and care for our neighbors. Our deepest identity is not found in national strength, political power, or personal success, but in Christ, who sets us free from sin and fear so that we can live for others. In God’s kingdom, freedom is not self-indulgence—it is holy interdependence.
