One of the most heartfelt, and painful, stories in Scripture outside the story of Jesus Himself is found in the Gospels. While all three accounts are powerful, the Gospel of Mark gives us deeper insight into the suffering and faith of a woman whose story is told in Mark 5:25–34.
A woman who had lived with continuous bleeding for twelve years endured deep physical and emotional suffering.
When we meet her in Scripture, she’s not only worn down physically, she’s emotionally spent, her resources gone, cut off from community and faith. The purity laws of her day labeled her “unclean.” That meant she had to stay away, from other people, from worship, from any normal life.
Twelve years without an embrace.
Twelve years repeating the same explanations.
Twelve years facing disappointment after disappointment.
And still, deep down, she held onto the belief that healing was possible. Maybe that’s what makes her story stand out.
It isn’t just that she reached for Jesus, It’s that, after all those years of pain, she hadn’t lost the courage to hope.
She weaves quietly through the crowd, holding onto one thought: “If I only touch His garment, I will be healed.” — Matthew 9:21
That’s so deeply human. Faith isn’t always loud. It isn’t always certain. Sometimes, faith is just reaching out at the end of your rope.
The crowd is everywhere, pressing up close to Jesus. But this woman moves with purpose. Others brush against Him, not thinking. She reaches out because she needs to, and she touches Him.
And suddenly, Jesus stops. In all that noise and movement, even then, He feels one shaking hand reach out.
He sees her.
Not as her sickness.
Not as an interruption.
Not as a problem.
HE SEES HER!!! (That is a key information)
He looks at her and calls her, “Daughter.”
Maybe that healed more than her body ever could. Because Jesus didn’t just heal her physically. He restored her dignity, her identity, her belonging.
The woman who spent years trying to hide in her pain now finds herself wrapped in compassion. Her story shows us: healing isn’t always about everything flipping back to perfect.
Sometimes, healing starts the moment hope finds the strength to reach out again.
So, if you’re carrying pain no one else sees…
If you’re tired from holding on…
If you wonder if faith still matters after so much disappointment, Reach!
Reflection:
Where has disappointment or exhaustion made you stop reaching?
What would it mean to believe healing is still possible?
Matthew 9:22 — “Take heart, daughter… your faith has healed you.”
Her life tells us: Faith isn’t always a confident shout.
Sometimes, it’s hope, wounded, broken, hurt, but still reaching for Jesus.
